School Uniform Policy

Rationale

At Ballyshannon National School, we are committed to providing a happy, respectful, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all pupils. The school uniform plays an important role in fostering a sense of belonging and school pride, promoting equality among pupils, and reducing unnecessary pressures related to clothing choices. By wearing the school uniform, pupils represent themselves and our school positively and are encouraged to focus on learning, friendship, and participation in school life.

Aims of the Policy

The aims of this policy are to:

• Promote a positive school identity and sense of community.

• Encourage equality and inclusion among all pupils.

• Ensure pupils are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities.

• Support a neat, practical, and comfortable standard of dress.

• Reduce distractions and allow pupils to focus on learning.

School Uniform

Infants – Second Class

Pupils may wear:

• Grey tracksuit bottoms

• School tracksuit top with school crest

• Grey collared T-shirt

• Grey trousers

• Grey shirt

Third – Sixth Class

School Uniform

• Maroon jumper or cardigan with school crest

• Grey trousers, skirt, or pinafore

• Grey shirt or grey collared T-shirt

• Navy, brown, or black shoes

Tracksuit

• Grey tracksuit bottoms

• School tracksuit top with school crest

• Grey collared T-shirt

The school will inform parents and guardians when the tracksuit is to be worn for specific activities or occasions.

Footwear

Children should wear safe, suitable footwear for both indoor and outdoor activities.

For health and safety reasons:

• Shoes should have non-slip rubber soles.

• Platform shoes and high heels are not permitted.

• Footwear should be practical, secure, and appropriate for school activities.

Jewellery

For health and safety reasons, jewellery should be kept to a minimum.

The following are permitted:

• A watch

• One stud earring in each ear

The following are not permitted:

• Earrings in the upper part of the ear

• Nose rings

• Facial piercings

• Dangling earrings

• Any other jewellery or piercings that may present a safety risk

Pupils may be asked to remove jewellery that does not comply with this policy.

Expectations

All pupils are expected to wear the correct school uniform or tracksuit, as appropriate, during school hours, school outings, and school-related activities unless otherwise advised by the school or specifically excused by the principal.

Parents and guardians are asked to support the implementation of this policy by ensuring that children attend school dressed in the correct uniform and appropriate footwear.

Equality and Inclusion

The school is committed to ensuring that the uniform policy is implemented fairly and sensitively. Where exceptional circumstances arise, parents or guardians are encouraged to discuss their situation with the principal so that appropriate support can be considered.

As we look ahead to each new school year, we will continue to work together to make our school a happy, respectful, and inclusive place for everyone. This includes ensuring that all pupils wear the correct uniform or tracksuit, along with appropriate footwear. This policy was approved by the Board of Management and will be reviewed periodically to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the school community.
